Bishop Donal Raymond Lamont O. Carm(1911-2003)
Our Congregation was founded by Bishop Donal Raymond Lamont O. Carm in 1959.Bishop Donal Raymond Lamont was born on the 27th of July 1911 in Ballycastle, Co Antrim, Northern Ireland. He was born into a middle class family of five boys and one girl. He and his brother John became Carmelite friars. After secondary education he joined the Carmelite Order to become a priest. In 1946 he volunteered to go on mission in Zimbabwe. In 1957, Mutare was constituted as a diocese with Fr Lamont as its first bishop.
In 1959, inspired by the Holy Spirit Bishop Donal Lamont founded the Congregation of the Handmaids of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. He entrusted the formation of the young Sisters to the Precious Blood Sisters (CPS).
Bishop Lamont stood for the poor (Matt. 25) and less privileged of the society, worked for the promotion of culture, promoted equal opportunities to education and health facilities to all during time of segregation and bottleneck systems. He was committed to the work of social justice and peace.
He strived to do the will of God. His motto was Ut Placeam Deo which translates “That I may please God”. He had great devotion to Our Lady.
He served in the diocese until 1977 when he was deported back to Ireland. In 1980 after the independence he came back to Zimbabwe and resigned his office as a Bishop in 1982. He returned to Ireland where he died on the 14th of August 2003 at the age of 92.
We are the Handmaids of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Sisters commonly known as Carmelite Sisters. We are an Apostolic Congregation of Diocesan Right affiliated to the Order Carmelites, in which our Sisters commit themselves to follow the Holy Gospel in the spirit derived from the Carmelite Rule and the Carmelite Spiritual traditions (Constitutions art. 1). We were founded in 1959 by the late Bishop Donal Raymond Lamont O.Carm in the Diocese of Mutare, Zimbabwe.
The years after the two World Wars are marked with cultural changes accompanied by new patterns of social life which influenced the world of spirituality. The intensification of the spirit of individualism that grew in the 1960’s arrived in Zimbabwe with other faces. There emerged a society in which the poor and the disadvantaged had to serve the rich at little cost and at the degradation of human dignity. There was a spirit of confusion between the role of the state and Christian identity, no peace, oppression and inferiority complex among races, inequality in the distribution of resources and access to services, suffering, violence and denial of the other’s culture. All this gave birth to a master-servant relationship. The banishing of Catholic schools and the administration of the schools by the state changed the catechetical activities in school curricula. This resulted in the shortage of catechists for there was a shift from catechesis being done at school to catechesis being given voluntary catechists. Voluntary catechists required payment which the local people could not afford.
As renewal in Mutare diocese was in the form of development of local people by the building of new structures for education and health, for liturgical worship there arose another problem, that of the shortage of personnel. Schools did not have enough teachers, there was shortage of nurses in hospitals and Christians and catechumenates had few catechists or no catechists.
It is in this historical situation that Bishop Lamont felt the need of deepening and concretizing Christian spirituality. There was need for a spirituality issued from the heart, a spirituality of contemplation in action, of service, a witnessing spirituality that gave testimony. The concrete ways of expressing this spirituality were full involvement in catechetical work, education, women empowerment, provision of health services and facilities. With the concrete needs that were around him Bishop Lamont responded with a spirit of love and humble service for the poor, a spirit of obedience to the Will of God and a spirit of faithfulness to his conscience and passion for justice. With most missionaries being deported back it was an opportune time for Bishop Lamont to bring his long life dream to reality. With the help of the Holy Spirit the Sisters by him founded played a pivotal role in the area of evangelization during the liberation struggle.
At the example of Mary Mother and Teacher of community life centered on the Eucharist there was need for prophetic witnesses who would testify the presence of God among his people. In this situation the congregation of the HLMC was founded. The founder Bishop Lamont wanted African Sisters in his diocese of Mutare, who will be testimonies of the Lord with the aim that each member should glorify God and sanctify themselves in poverty, chastity, and obedience devoting themselves to teaching, nursing and any other apostolate for the benefit of the church’s mission.
Our Mission
We are active contemplative Handmaids of Our Lady of Mount Carmel living in sisterly love, who recognize human weakness and failures; in our communities we foster a spirit of forgiveness, reconciliation, healing and peace.
Empowered by God’s Word, the Eucharist and prayer, we build up God’s kingdom by being signs of contradiction to the values of a materialistic society through faithful observance of the evangelical counsels. Inspired by the example of Elijah and being the “Other Hand of Mary”, we happily reach out in love and compassion to all the people especially the marginalized, poor and the oppressed; being a sign of hope in their lives.
Our Vision
To be active contemplative Handmaids of Our Lady of Mount Carmel who live in allegiance to Jesus Christ, surrendering ourselves heart and soul to God whom we love above all else and are totally dedicated to His service.
